Sell Coins in Chicago With Someone Who Understands Collections
Coin collections are not all the same. Some are mostly silver or bullion. Some have collector value. Some include albums, proof sets, mint sets, paper money, world coins, or certified PCGS and NGC coins.
Bring collections in as they are
Do not clean coins. Cleaning coins will permanently destroy collector value. Even light cleaning can turn a collectible coin into a much less desirable coin.
If coins are already in albums, holders, tubes, or old envelopes, leave them that way. Organization often helps the evaluation.
Common coin and currency items
- U.S. silver coins, 90% silver dimes, quarters, halves, and dollars
- Wheat pennies, old nickels, type coins, proof sets, and mint sets
- Gold and silver bullion coins
- Inherited coin collections and estate collections
- World coins, foreign coins, U.S. paper money, and world paper money
- Certified coins graded by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or similar services
Collector value vs. melt value
A coin buyer should be able to explain when something is being valued for metal content and when it may have collector value. That difference matters with better-date coins, certified coins, older paper money, and inherited collections.
Useful for estates and family collections
Many people selling coins are not collectors themselves. They inherited a box, a safe, an album, or a mixed estate group and simply need a clear explanation of what is common, what is silver, what is collectible, and what is worth closer review.
